Bad Practice
This image shows an example of an unsafe work practice.
Summary Statement
Not using gloves. Using gloves will help increase your grip and protect your skin. Using the correct shovel for the job can help to reduce fatigue.
Twisting your back while shoveling may result in injuries. To help avoid injuries, face the direction of the throw with your feet apart, one foot ahead of the other with your knees slightly bent. Taking mini breaks (a few seconds) and stretching during the day can help relieve muscle strain.
Cement can cause irritant/allergic contact dermatitis, alkaline burns, and dry skin or irritation. Use proper gloves, wash and dry hands when necessary. Do not bring cement dust home; remove work clothes before leaving the work site. Work clothes should be laundered separately.
