Bad Practice
This image shows an example of an unsafe work practice.
Summary Statement
The worker is using a 2x4 to hand screed concrete. Hand screeding normally requires workers to bend forward at the waist and grip the straight edge with a flexed wrist pinch grip. The awkward posture and high force necessary to pull the board along the concrete can result in back, wrist or hand injuries due to overuse. If you are physically capable, easy stretching before work and taking small mini breaks (a few seconds) during the day, can help reduce strain and fatigue. When possible, the use of a motorized screed can reduce ergonomic injuries.
Workers is using long sleeves and gloves to prevent contact dermatitis from the concrete. Workers should be able to cleanup, and change clothes before going home.
