Bad Practice
This image shows an example of an unsafe work practice.
Summary Statement
Do not stand on the top rung of a ladder. The ladder should be tied off to prevent sidewards movement and it should be extended so that the top rails are resting evenly on a firm surface. Ladder top section should extend 36 inches above header. Fly section of the ladder should be set so worker can access the work area at about shoulder height (feet positioned about 3 rungs down). Ladder sections should be set so they maintain required overlap.
Ladders should be placed at a 75 degree angle or a 4:1 ratio, base to the top support point. For a ladder that has a top support point of twenty foot, the base should be 5 feet from the wall.
