National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences

Summary Statement

This NIEHS guidance is primarily intended for workers, volunteers, and homeowners who engage in small-scale mold clean-up and treatment of flooded or water-damaged homes. A smallscale project is considered to be 10 square feet or less. For projects larger than 10 square feet, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention all recommend using the services of a qualified mold assessment and remediation specialist. The New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene recommends professional specialists for extensive contamination larger than 100 square feet.
